Rightful Heirs of the Sultanate of Sulu PDF Print E-mail

After the death of Sultan Jamalul Kiram II in 1936, who was childless, his brother Datu Mawallil Wasit succeeded him to the throne. Prior to his assumption, he was the Crown Prince or Raja Muda of Sultan Jamalul Kiram II. However, his succession has only lasted for six months.

When the Official of the British North Borneo Company held pending its release of agreed yearly rental, the legal heirs filed a petition to the High Court of North Borneo in the Form of Interpleader Suite. On October 11, 1939, the High Court of North Borneo issued a Grant of Letter of Administration to Datu Punjungan Kiram, appointing him as the Administrator of the State of North Borneo; copy of which hereto attached and made as an integral part of this Progress of the Sultanate Movement. Likewise, on December 11, 1939, a decision was promulgated naming the Nine (9) Rightful Principal Heirs, namely:

1. Dayang-Dayang Hadji Piandao Kiram
2. Dayang-Dayang Tarhata Kiram
3. Dayang-Dayang Sakinul In Kiram
4. Dayang-Dayang Sitti Rada Kiram
5. Dayang-Dayang Putli Jahara Kiram
6. Dayang-Dayang Sitti Mariam Kiram
7. Datu Esmail Kiram
8. Datu Punjungan Kiram - Administrator of the State of the North Borneo and father of the present Sultan
9. NAPSA MORA or NAPSA LAGAYAN, Mother of Datu Punjungan Kiram and wife of Datu Raja Muda Mawallil Wasit

Said decision, popularly known as Maskaskie Judgment, clearly emphasized on the government of the State of North Borneo's recognition and respect of the proprietary rights of the Sultan of Sulu over the State of North Borneo and the resumption of the continuing yearly rental to the heirs and would be heirs up to the present date.

The crowning of His Highness Sultan Ismail Dalus Kiram, witnessed by almost 200,000 people in Jolo,Sulu, the center of Kingdom of Sulu Island on March 12 ,2001 has marked the renaissance of the Sultanate of Sulu to its new height. The policy and vision of the reigning Sultan has shaken the core of the sultanate main issues. Leadership has been redefined to achieve renewed unity among its people for continuous integrity. The extensive peace overwhelming fit for the royal honor. This has earned Sultan Ismail Kiram II the genuine leader with compassion and humility, soft-spoken, regal and yet with cheerful personality.
